Clelia Ifrim : Casa de pe malul oceanului – House on the ocean shore

Posted on

After a reception at the Romanian embassy, I came home to find a next collection.

As chance would have it, the book was by Clelia Ifrim, a gifted and prolific poet familiar to our readers. She writes in both Romanian and English, and her delicate and imaginative poems often work well in her own translations :

A handful of snow
taken from the empty field –
the year’s first haiku

A last silver coin –
I feel in my silk pocket
a silver fever

The use of white and the delicacy of feeling are characteristics of her work.
